First, on a 65, the pump is right under the reservoir. The cylinder is behind the grill. It sounds like your pump lid was overtightened once. You don't need lots of torque to keep it sealed. Get some rubber gasketing material and make a rubber gasket to push on to the center bolt. This should seal it off. These systems, when run dry, will not take long to tear up the guts of the pump. I know, those reservoir covers are a pain because MF didn't put a dipstick in them, and the earlier ones don't even have a filler plug on the cover. I hate having to take the whole thing off to check it, because that increases the chance of main gasket failure.
