First Alert makes (at least they used to make) a detector that could be "networked" together such that an alarm in one would set off the alarm in all of them that are wired together. You may be able to use that for your needs. Sorry, I don't have a model number, but they have a website, see below. Also, remember to get a Carbon Monoxide detector for your shop, and wire that into the house if you can. If the CO gets to you, the detector could alert your wife before it's too late.
