I watched an edition of "this old house"
on PBS awhile back that had demonstrations
of just what you're looking for... The systems came in different $$$ and capabilities and could alert you to just about any
event from anywhere... flooding, overheated water heater, intrusion, smoke, Carbon monoxide. Some had to be 'hardwired' but there were some systems that used radio transmitters or the 120 V house wiring to transmit their signals back to a central console. The real fancy control systems allowed you to turn on lights, run dimmers, appliances etc. from the central console... scary. bbott
