The only question that I would have, is you mentioned you replaced the resistor. Did you replace the original equipment resister or did you install a resistor from an automotive store?The one from an automotive store should be for a 12 volt cut down, the original would be for a 6 volt cut down. The dim light at the coil could have been a result of point contact. Just a thought.
