I suppose my Grand-fathers got their collections the same way. They both had or worked a boat building business, in Marietta, at the foot of Appian Way. (I think thats the name, ain't been there in 25 years.) It is located where the restored steam-boat is anchored, near the library. It was one of the big floods that forced them out of business! they had all of the materials on hand, stacked up, and a hull on the ways, when the big flood came and took it all away! That bankrupted them and they moved to Pittsburgh. My Grandfather built some kind of river steamers for Brazil. And one of my further back ancestors worked on Admiral Perry's fleet, and others worked in Philadelphia, on other boats. My Grandfather was Captain J.M. Hammitt. He built a lot of steamboats, and used a lot of products made in Pittsburgh! Around the age of 70, he became a broker for the local barge companies, buying and selling barges! BY: James M. Hammitt
