No, they do not freewheel, until the brake pack gets fried. Then it's time for a new TA anyway. Our 3088 runs the NH 790 chopper the best in low 7th, which would be low 4th with the TA back on any IH prior to the 88 series. That's what it's there for. The three best ways to wreck a TA is not changing out all of the rear end oil at least once every couple years, not keeping the linkage adjusted, and shifting from direct to low to slow down a heavy load, such as coming flying in off of the road with a full wagon and pulling the stick back. That will fry the brake pack quick.
