A few thoughts about tractors... If properly cared for, a good diesel engine will go 4000 to 6000 hours (or more) before rebuild time. (However, beware, there are some engines out there with inherently "poor design" that are dogs.) A gas engine will typically go 1/3 to 1/2 the hours of a diesel (or even less) before rebuild time..... As a rule of thumb (personal)... 1 diesel horsepower = about 1.25 gas horsepower in "workability" A 40 HP diesel will typically work the same as a 50 HP gasoline engine due to its thermodynamic and torque characteristics.. and the fact that they are simply built heavier from the get-go. Whatever you get.. Can you get parts? Is there a decent, reputable dealer or shop in your area that services the brand or model that you choose. What do the other farms in your area use ? (often a good indication of the preceeding)
