H's came from the factor with a six volt battery and positive ground. A normal 6 volt charger should work, just connect the charger positive lead to the positive terminal on the battery and the negative lead to the negative terminal.

Some tractors (and six volt cars) have had the original six volt battery replaced with an 8 volt one. Old generators with a cutout relay will charge and 8 volt battery, just a little slow than they charge a 6 volt. Using an 8 volt battery is basically a patch instead of fixing the 6 volt system to work correctly.

You can get 6 volt batteries at any farm store, or any place that specializes in batteries. Once in a while you'll see one at a place like Autozone, but I've always been leery of those because there isn't that much demand for them and you never know how long they've sat.

Six volt starters require large, heavy guage cables (1/0 or 2/0). Best place to get them is at a truck repair place, although I understand NAPA can order them as well. The ones you see at the auto parts stores for 12 volt starters won't carry enough current & your starter will turn really slow.
