Jack, the 460 can be made into an extremely lively motor if you want to put a serious effort together. I have worked on them for years and have had success and failure with them. I have done cylinder head porting for years now for race cars and mud trucks. The biggest problem with the stock 460 is the cylinder heads. The intake ports are wonderfull and will flow about 300 cfm of air without any problem. The exhausts were built very poorly to give additional exhaust manifold clearance for the cars they were putting these in and they are very poor. The heads have no balance and the exhaust flow would not even be good for a 302 motor. That is why a stock 350 chevy will be much more lively than a stock 460 because they have better exhaust ports. The big differenc now is that there are a ton of beautiful aluminum heads available for the 460 now with matching intakes and cams that will make it an amimal. There are affordable stroker kits to increase the cubic inches substantially. These are out there in such volume now that the prices are downright getting cheap. You don't have to mess with junkyard heads anymore. The only junkyard head that is really good is the late model fuel injected efi heads for the 460 truck. They can be really made to run. I have a friend that has those on a 68 mustang that is a tubbed 3000 pound super pro car that runs 9.60 's running from 147 to 149 mph in the quarter mile. He is an engineer for ford. I think he said the car made 625 hp on the dyno. I personally think the best aluminum head is the blue thunder heads. They have a big block chevy exhaust flange pattern so header kits can be fabricated faily easy and boy do they make power. If you want a nice driver friendly motor you could use any of the motorsport or John Kasse heads that are out there. Edelbrock makes heads as does twisted flow that have matching intake manifolds and cam kits that make 500 hp without even breathing hard. I would get a truck shorblock if you are using a 460 because they have the football shaped head bolts and the rod is much less likely to come apart at rpms. Or there are tons of stroker kits with I beam or H beam rods and big cubic horsepower. Put 514 cubic inches with a set of edelbrock or motorsport heads in a late model mustang body and you will have a 10 second car you can drive to work and shift at 5800 rpms. Add a little NOS on there and you will have car that can be street driven reliably and run in the 9's on saturday night at the race track. Just remember that the 302 and 351 small blocks have evolved so far they are light years ahead of most big blocks now. Basically you can go as big and fast as your pockets are deep! Same old story for the last 50 years. Good luck and have fun with it.
