As previously posted I had an oil leak in my 641 that only happened under heavy load. After finally finding the leak coming from the valve cover gasket I removed the cover and found the very brittle gasket in four pieces with a one inch gap where the leak was. Simple, right? Replace the gasket and life will be good. NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!. Did that, still leaked when pulling. This time thanks to T.C. in TX I did not pull the tank first but just wiggled the cover out from under the tank. Found the cover was not seating but resting on the front bracket, mounted on the engine, which holds up the front of the tank. Loosened the bracket, slid it forward and ground off a little of the flange on the valve cover. New gasket. Problem solved, right? NOOOOO!!!! Still leaks. Off with the cover and found the rocker arm train oil return line too high and holding the cover up. The rocker train, valves, head, and cover are like new; no sludge at all. I do use Mobile One so attributed the 'clean' to it. Now I think the motor, or at least the head was rebuilt not too long ago (I've had the tractor just three years) and the assembler did not notice the oil line too high or the cover resting on the front bracket. I should have checked the cover for fit the first time I took it off. I guess I'm a little slow; not too fast; sort of half fast. Hope this saves one of you some time.
