O/T: '94 Saturn computer codes

My sister-in-law bought this thing; its her first car. I test-drove it for her, seemed like a good little car. Now I've found a lot of little stuff wrong with it and am trying to make it right for her. She called this morning and said the Check Engine light is on. Is this like the older Chrylsers in that all you have to do is cycle the key on and off to extract the codes? Or does it require a scan at the dealer?
