Like I said before; I do not own a 4 speed trans so I can only go by what the manual says about it. If you go back to the main page of this site and scroll down you will see a section titled FORD. Go down there and ask your question as others do know a lot more about the 4 speed than I do. I will put a link to the Ford board if you have problems finding it. Now with that said you should be able to remove the top (in netural) and work the shifting forks by hand and see the couplings moving applying the gears. Make sure all are in the netural (center position) position and then install the top.
