raleigh, They are 2 totally different tractors.
2 different frame set ups. etc.etc.
The 4020 will weigh about 9500 lbs + -. The 5020 will weigh in closer to 15000 lbs. The engines are 2 different engines also. 95 hp apposed to 135+hp.
The 4020 is a true rowcrop tractor, that wasdesigned for all 4 or 6 row equipment, either 3-pt, or side mount.
The 5020 was a row crop tractor but its wt and bulkiness made it better suited for primary tillage, or large heavy 3-pt work. it is just a little tooo big to be a chore tractor. It hasn't been till the larger MFWD tractors that loader really became widely availabe for these ol girls, Not to say that there hasn't been some company out there that made a loader for one.
The 4020 had a standard and Power Shift trannys where the 5020 is stanndard only.
The tractors to compare a 4020 to are.......
4000,4010,4320,4520,4620!!! Same basic chassis.
The tractors to compare a 5020 to are.......
5010, 6030. Here too the same chassis.
These are tractors only in the JD lineup.
Older HP can be bought cheaper than lower hp tractors in most cases. The popularity of the 4020 still to this day had kept its resale prices up.
Though most folks will walk past a 4520 PS in better condition to pay more money for a wore-out 4020, Go Figure! Hope this helps.
