I can't speak to an upgrade, The control friction is a simple spring loaded slide that has an indent where the center position is. Located in the square tube the controls are in (easy to see). If properly adjusted it prevents the forward and reverse control from jumping between forward and reverse (I call rocking). My wasn't set properly when I got it and I had to adjust the linkage (tighten up and remove slop) and tighent up the friction springs just a tad. As to the post below, While I can't speak for all models, there is a seat switch that kills the machine if your not in it. If equiped (my 4500 is), unless the seat switch has been bypassed you can't operate the loader from the bucket. It too is easy to spot. Right in the center, under the rear edge of the seat mounting plate. Another safety feature to look for is the boom locking valve. Mine is one the left side. It is a electric hyd valve mounted on the cyl. When power is shut off it closes the valve to prevent the boom from droping if not running and/or the operator in the seat.
