Diesel fuel that is sold for off road use is not subject to the same taxes as fuel sold for on road use. Therefor the off road diesel is treated with a red dye. This is supposed to prevent the use of off road diesel in vehicles which are used mostly on the road. If you are caught with dyed diesel in your pick-up truck or 18 wheeler, you are subject to a pretty hefty fine. Anyhow, that is how it is supposed to work.
