The 420 5-roller and the 430/440/1010 all have the same track parts. Of course, there were several different pad sizes and two different chains (one was two-bolt and the other was 4-bolt). The main rollers and sprockets cross over. Also, the final drives are all the same, with some late 440's and JD350's using one extra fiber disc and steel plate than the earlier models. The replacement disc set has 8 discs in it, so JD has that covered already.

The early 420's had a gear direction reverser, while the late 420's and all the others had a differential reverser. Transmissions cross between all the models, although the bell housings on the 1010 are different than the 420/440's. Much of the sheet metal, seat parts and dash are the same on the 440's and 1010's but different on the 420's. The model 62 manual angle and 64 power angle blades were used on all of models. I can't recall the model numbers for the loaders.

Of course, the big difference is that the 420/430/440 used 2-cylinder engines (the 440 also offered the 2-53 Detroit Diesel as an option), while the 1010 used a 4-cylinder in either gas or diesel.

I've had all of the above from time-to-time (MC, 40, 420, 440, 1010 and JD350), so I've learned all this the hard way. I like the 420 5-roller the best because it's as useful as the newer varients but still looks like the classic JD 2-cyl machines.

Today's Featured Article - Usin Your Implements: Bucket Loader - by Curtis Von Fange. Introduction: Dad was raised during the depression years of the thirties. As a kid he worked part time on a farm in Kansas doing many of the manual chores. Some of the more successful farmers of that day had a new time saving device called a tractor. It increased the farm productivity and, in general, made life easier because more work could be done with this 'mechanical beast'. My dad dreamed that some day he would have his own tractor with every implement he could get. When he rea ... [Read Article]
