If she charges okay with the gennys Field post dead grounded but NOT otherwise and its a Voltage Regulator System, the problems either the VR is bad or badly misadjusted,,,,,,,,,,,or the VR isnt grounded well (usually to the gennys case),,,,,,,,,,or the wires bad from the gennys Field post to FLD on the VR. If its a 2 wire Cutout Relay system (light switch controls gennys field current) ,,,,,,then the problems either, the light switch is bad,,,,,,,,,,,,or the light switch isnt well grounded,,,,,,,or the wires bad from the gennys field post up to the light switch. If you leave the gennys Field post dead grounded and run for longgggggggg periods, its possible you might eventually overcharge the battery or boil it over or cause excess outgassing etc. If the lights were on the chances are less of that happening. Worse comes to worse leave it grounded for a while (especially right after start up) n then remove it so you dont overcharge. Best bet is to check the VR's ground and the connections n wire to the gennys field post and Fld on a VR or else the light switches ground and the wire from it to the gennys Fielde post if its the 2 wire cutout relay system.
