memories of the old days

i benn reading the posts the past couple days about the farming community and being part of it and it got me thinking (my brain hurts again) about the old days growing up. we had a close farm community. everybody helped the neighbors out when they needed it. when someone was shelling corn from the crib, everybody showed up. we looked foreward to the big lunch, home made pies, the tub full of ice cold pop, lemonade and ice water out of a mason jar. wearing coveralls with bailing twine tied around your ankles to keep the mice out when you were shoveling ears in the crib. the niighbor down the road owned the corn sheller, the husking wagon and had a semi with a grain trailer. during the week, in the old chicken coop, they had a wood stove with a coffee pot. about 4:30 am the farmers would show up there, drinking coffee, having the secret mens club meeting, discussing polictics, farming, religion, whatever. if ou needed to know something, needed something fixed, or needed help with something, that was the place to go. unfortunately, as time marched on, the suburban growth ate up all the farms, the men have long since past. a few years ago, we got surronded by the suburban sprawl and were forced to sell and relocate. first thing i did after moving all the equipment, was to start mowing. went down the ditch with the b and a 5ft woods deck, got hung up on a road sign, 5 ft deck, 4 ft to the sign....dint fit. after bending up the deck, getting stuck....and chanting a flurry of explicatives...a neighbor stopped by with a chain and pulled me out. we visited for quite a while, went for coffee and i made a new friend. as he was leaving, he says, " if you ever need anything, the shed door is always open, just go in and help yourself. i think i found a new home. sorry for the long post, just wanted to share this with you all.
