Use only your brakes and chains/straps to keep the tractor in place. Leaving the tractor in gear will, over a period of time, cause your transmission gears to wear as the tractor rocks slightly back and forth on the trailer. Even a very small movement on the trailer causes the gear teeth to chatter between each other.
