Well BAW, the best advice I can give you is to keep the generator 6 volt and get your electrical system in good shape. That includes good and proper-sized wires with good connections, good grounds (especially where the starter mounts to the tractor), good #1 battery cables, and the mag or distributor set up and timed properly. If that is the case, why would you want to go to 12 volt? The 6-volt systems work GREAT if they're set up properly, every bit as good starting and operating as a 12 volt.
