This happened to my Yanmar 240d also, the gear shifter wouldn't shift into any gear. I thought it would be a big job, so I waited all winter before tackling the problem, Luckly the first thing I did was take off the rubber boot on the shifter there was the problem, a broken pin. It's spring loaded so put the pin in as you push out the old one, if the pin is gone pull up on the shifter and insert a new pin. Mine works fine now. I know it's not a JD but may help.
