removing distributor

I have to remove the distributor on my Ford 2000 3 cyl. gas tractor. I have been to told to make a mark in the direction the rotor is pointing before I take it out. Not sure where to make the mark. One the top of the distributor (the round area) that the dust cover sets in? Not really anywhere on engine to make a mark. Thanks
