Use the nslookup command to see you can resolve the name of the site to an IP. nslookup yahoo.com If you can't do an nslookup on the name of the site, then either there's a problem with your ISP's DNS server, or you're typing in the wrong name. If you can do an nslookup, the next step is to use the traceroute ("tracert" on Windows) to see where your problem is. tracert yahoo.com You'll get a bunch of lines with network hops. If there's a firewall issue, you won't make past the first or second hop. Whereever the lines turn to all stars, that's where your problem is. (Unless the last hop is "something-or-other.yahoo.com". If your ISP is at fault, the tracert report is all the proof you need.
