By far the American chestnut, even though an Asian blight wiped
out all mature trees years ago. Reseachers think they will come up
with a resistant variety some day.
I have plenty of 3-5 foot live trees sprouting off old stumps on my
property. Pretty sad demise if you look at the huge economic
impact their nuts & lumber gave us and food source for wildlife.
There's even a cult-like following today. Check out The American
Chestnut Foundation site, photos of railcars full of chestnuts, etc.
