The starter switch setup is an ingenious solution to a serious safety problem, as you mentioned. If the gear lever is in a position dedicated to the starter switch, the tractor obviously will never lurch forward or back when the starter is activated. T-series Fergusons have six gear lever positions: 4 forward speeds, Reverse, and Start. Start is directly forward from Reverse. The switch is located on the upper surface of the clutch housing, just ahead of the steering gearbox. Mine doesn't work either, and has been replaced by a NAPA solenoid, but I assume the original switch contains contacts tough enough to withstand running volts direct from the battery to the starter when activated by the rod from transmission. The switch itself has a bakelite(plastic) body, with two electrodes projecting vertically, both threaded for nuts; I assume one is for a cable to the battery, the other for the cable to the starter. The switch is bolted to a metal plate about 3x5", which is bolted to the top of the clutch housing. Your guess is as good as mine about what's underneath the metal plate. Enjoy!
