I have a Fransgard V4000 right now and I like it. It is well built and safe and simple to use. The good thing about a proper factory model is it has safe controls, safety guards and the anchoring plow/skid plate. It holds the tractor when pulls are heavy. An ordinary winch does not have these futures so you would have to build them as well. Size depends on the tractor and size of load. My winch has a 8000-9000 lb pull which meets my need. Cost for a new one of this size and brand would be in the $3500 to 4500 range. If you can find a used one, as I did, you are looking at $1500-2500. Also there are more manufacturers building cheaper ones from India, China, etc. Farmi is probably the best known brand and is an excellent winch as well.
