A cross motor is a very angry one. Sometimes this malevolent attitude is manifested by bucking back on the crank (on old machines) or refusal to start at all. Other motors may be more devious, taking their unwitting owners out into the middle of 200 acres before ceasing all function. It is best to make peace with your machine before coaxing it to life. Laying fresh oil and filters on the altar helps, as do frequent tune ups and greasing. Hell hath no fury like a tractor scorned. Hope that helps.
