Aliis Chalmers 720

I have an Allis Chalmers 720 lawn tractor and was wondering if anyone can help me. When the hydostat lever is put in forward it works but as soon as it goes in reverse that is all you have unless you slam it into forward then it works a little. Does anyone have any experience with this problem?
