Alan, if thats the mag im thinking of and it really is a mag, not a distributor, that wire is the kill wire which kills the tractor if its connected anywhere to frame gtound. It just shorts out the points and some tractors had an on off type switch that just connected that wire to ground when in off and opened it when on. John T in Indiana
