Auto darkening lenses need to go dark in about 1/100 of a second of striking an arc. Otherwise you could get a flash. It took a while to get a lot of them approved. They are nice but you don't have to buy a new helmet. You can buy just the auto lens. Some are clear and some have a light tint. This is different than a magnifier lens. I don't recommend magnifier lenses except the weakest ones if you really really need them. It's like bringing the arc closer and that's got to be hard on your eyes. If you get flashed, you won't know for sure until 2 am when it feels like someone is sandblasting your eyes. Auto darkening helmets aren't used a lot in big shops. Most welders are pretty good at nodding their head to bring the helmet down. Some people do use them though. They're nice for chipping slag as well. With just the lenses available it is much better as one of the concerns with having one was if your helmet fell and broke. The original ones cost $300 to $400. Most buzz boxes use a 50 amp welder plug with 3 wires. Bigger welders use a similar plug like a dryer plug with 4 wires. Most new buzz boxes come with the plug. It doesn't hurt if you have a bigger circuit breaker. A 30 is too small. Hope this helps. Dave
