Six taken off my property since yesterday morning (central New York, Otsego County). Day before yesterday, I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen in my life - standing by my kitchen window. He was nowhere to be found yesterday. A question about custom cutting. I haven't had it done in near 20 years - I just quarter them, stick them in the freezer, and cut later as needed. The local rate - for custom cutting and wrapping used to be in the $25 - $50 range - depending on what kind of cuts. I suspect it's higher now. But . . . I saw an article about the Government program to give deer meat to "needy" people. It's more-or-less, a "give your deer" to the poor program. I read the small print though, and it seems the NY State governemt, with our tax dollars, is paying over $100 per deer for the butchering. Is that correct? If so, we - the tax payers are getting robbed. I am also thinking how things have changed. 20 years ago, people would get their names put on a waiting list for road-kill deer. If a deer got hit, the people who were on the list and lived closest were called. It was up to them to get there right away, pick up the mess and deal with it. I got one once - hot summer night, I got the call. Big doe, not a visible scratch on her. Skinned it out - and what a mess. Ended up getting one piece of meat from the filet mignon area in the back and threw the rest out.
