The fuel economy is recorded as (horsepower X hours)/(gallon) and is said as "horsepower hours per gallon". For example, say you have a tractor that makes 100 hp and gets an economy of 15 hp-hrs/gal. To determine how many gallons per hour is being consumed, divide the horsepower by the economy (100 hp) / (15 hp-hrs/gal) and you get 6.7 gallons per hour. The fact that horsepower enters into the equation is why the little garden tractors tested at Nebraska in the '50s got such terrible economy. They obviously didn't burn much fuel per hour but they also didn't make much power out of what they did burn.
