The part about the mud is what threw me.
Again, you can search www for "particulate emissions" and find much info.
The major engine manufacturers are all using computers to read many engine parameters and adjust fuel and cylinder pressures to reduce Nitrous Oxide emmisssions especially. Info is offered by them (CAT, Detroit Diesel, Cummins) on the internet.
The mining industry is attempting to improve underground worker health, they are being heavily reguated by the government. You (or your daughter) can look at

www.cdc.gov/NIOSH Since this is a global concern, I am interested in learning what the Russian engine manufacturers and your government are doing to help clean up the air as well.
