Ford 3000 Three point lift

The three point lift on my Ford 3000 works smoothly if the lever is moved rapidly to the top position---the lift moves into place smoothly. But if the lever is moved up slowly to position a mower for example, the lift moves in jumps and it prevents a precise placement. Any ideas on the problem?
