I haven't smoked my pipes for about 10 years, but I used to be a heavy (read constant) pipe smoker. I used the pipecleaners with the added stiff bristles, and for the really dirty pipes a solution I used to by in the tobacco stores that came in a small yellow squeeze bottle...can't remember what it was called. Soak the pipecleaner in that and scrub the stem and shank well, then repeat with a clean one and leave it in. Helps a lot if you've got enough of a pipe collection to avoid 'chain smoking' one pipe. I had a couple of dozen that I'd rotate through. Dang 'it. Now you're making me miss 'em....
