I have the 1998 Silverado with 15,000 miles on it and it has run excellent. Just a couple of minor warranty items at first and that has been it. You will want the largest of the 3 vet V-8 engines (yep they come off the Vet line) and you will want the 6,600 GVWR package which adds an additional leaf. (If you have anykind of farm ops you can write off whatever percentage you use the vehicle on the farm since it is over 6,000 pounds. I use mine about 10% so we wrote off that much last year. Its legitimate. CHECK WITH YOUR ACCOUNTANT!) I have the 265 x 16 Goodyear Wranglers. Can't even see any appreciable wear on them. Mine is the 1500 extended cab with the 3rd. door. You will probably want the 2500 and it now comes with 3 doors in the extended cab line if that is your preference. I don't need the 8 foot bed all that much so it has worked out well for me. Somebody below mentioned something on the transmissions. The old type 200 were GM's big folly. Had one in an 84 S-10 that burned out at 30,000 miles. GM paid for it. These new ones are now electronic and I have had no problem with it. But I also have a 7 year warranty. Always buy the biggest warranty on a GM product. Guarantee it pays for itself. I had a 90 GMC PU before this 98. It had 85,000 miles on it when I traded and I never had a stitch of trouble with the transmission. The key is to have the trans. fluid/filter changed every 25,000 miles. I have one set of farm neighbors who's dad and 2 sons farm 4,000 acres. They currently have Dodges and are real dissapointed in them. They are constantly in the shop even though Dodge has paid for most of the repairs. Mrs. Red's 1996 GMC Jimmy is a piece of junk. It has had 5 major breakdowns in 37,000 miles. So GM has it's follies also.
