I attended my grand sons 4th grade Christmas program the other night and it brought to mind what I did at about that age when I was a student at a one room country school. We strung popcorn and cranberrys to decorate the Christmas tree. Each year before Christmas a makeshift stage was created. The riser was made of heavy 2 by 12 inch planks placed on apple crates. It created a stage platform about 20 inches off the floor. The planks were covered with an old carpet to add finish to the stage. The curtain was held by a single heavy wire bolted to walls on each side of the school. It was supported in the middle by a single wire attached to the ceiling. Our desks, mounted on wooden slat runners for ease of cleaning the floor and to adjust room arrangement as needed made it a simple matter to crowd them together to make room for the stage. After a few weeks of rehearsal we all assembled for the Christmas Program. Reciting poems and short pieces were completed by the younger students, including those in kindergarten. The older students were required to learn and perform a play. The entire school sang Christmas songs, and demonstrated proficiency in rhythm band. The same songs sung then are still being sung.
