You can't affford a charger but........... You can internally stress the posts/plates each time the cables are removed & tightened, wear on the posts and clamps, the risk of a short circuit when wrenching live batteries and the risk of a face full of acid from an exploding battery?
Battery chargers are dirt cheap.
The only way to blow a battery as described when boosting is if you had the boosting vehicle touching the boosed machine. Or you had the polarities mixed up.

Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead!
