Get a voltmeter or test light. Connect one side of it to the frame. Connect the other side to the terminal of the coil that goes to the points. Turn the tractor over. If using a meter, it will swing back and forth between 0 volts and battery voltage. If using a test light, it should go on and off. If not, you have bad points, or possibly a bad condenser. To just die like that could be lots of things, but a common cause would be that the rubbing block on the points is worn down to the point that the points do not open any more. If the voltmeter stays at zero, or the test lamp stays out, try opening the points with your finger to see if they open if pushed father than normal. If so, reset the point gap or replace the points entirely. The point contacts could also be burned, in which case they no longer close. clean them and reset the gap, or replace the points entirely.
