Well, Warren, you opened a popular discussion! I'd like to pass along the tip I got from a counter man at AutoZone when my Ford pickup was running pretty rough: look at the distributor and coil, and plug wires when the engine is running in the dark; if there is a short anywhere, you will see the flashes.
This visual method is far superior to the Polish method of discovering the source of a short: using a finger to trace each wire!
