I started out around 9 or 10. Raking hay, pulling manure spreader, hay wagon, drag harrow, etc. Which is how I started my kids. If you are going to buy them a tractor then take them with you and let them operate all the controls with-out it running and see how it fits them. If they can reach all the pedals and controls without getting out of postion in the seat will be safer for them.
