All of the other responses bring up some good points, but I think that you may have used some kind of sealer on the old gaskets such as silicone and blocked off the bowl vent on the bowl gasket. If the vent is plugged, the trapped air in the bowl will force the gas up the main tube before the gas rises to push up the float and stop the flow of gas. From what you are describing I believe that this is what is happening. Check my response to your post on the Allis Board for more details. Good luck.
