IA Gary, I don't believe that distemper in cats and coons is contagious to horses. It is a different strain. In horses it is also called shipping fever,or strangles. In horses the lymph nodes swell up, horse runs a fever and in the beginning they get very lethargic. They also get a thick purulent nasal discharge. They get a pus pocket under the jaw and throat area, then break and drain. NASTY!!! The snot and nasal discharge is very contagious to other horses. There is a vaccine for it, but it only covers one strain. I don't vaccinate for it myself. Have never had a problem, but I watch where I take my horses and I never let them water at a common tank or waterer when I am at a roping or a show. I always have my own bucket for each horse. Sale barns are usually the prime suspect for distemper as well as some boarding stables that have horses coming in and out all the time. It usually affects younger horses, if an older horse gets it, it can be tough on them.
