The rubber boot around the gear shifter is likely rotton from age and is now funneling water in instead of sheding it. Those transmissions with copper alloy bushings should not have GL-5 gear lube used. When exposed to moisture the sulphur based additives turn into a mild acid. GL-4 Marine is very good as it's designed to still protect in marine drives with leaking water seals. Pull the round three bolt cover located just above the pto on the back cover. With a powerful light carefully examine every gear tooth of both the r & P. Bad things can happen if abused.
