In the early 80's, my two boys and I reroofed our hip roof barn with new cedar shingles. We removed all the old shingles down to the roof boards. We soaked the new shingles in the horse tank, and then nailed them on two rows at a time after making two chalk lines to keep things straight. By soaking the shingles first, they can be installed with out any side gaps, and will conform to any curvature of the roof and will not split when nailed. When installing two rows at a time, the new shingle you pick up will fit one row or another with out it's edge lining up with the edge underneath. We borrowed scaffolding from a neighbor that just sat up against the side of the barn. The roof brackets were nailed on and then covered with shingles and could easily be removed later. The shingles came with the farm, so the cost was just our labor. Cedar shingles will last 40 to 50 years on the average. Good luck on your project.
