I had an old girl wander in here several years ago, same situation as yours. I tried to find the owner and went thru the hoops with the shelter but never found the owner. We've always had 2 or 3 dogs around so another one was no problem and she prefered to live outside anyway. She took a special likeing to the wife and kids. One day a scruffy mean mouthed junk collector came banging on the door when I wasn't there. He started giving my wife a rough time, the dog walked around my wife and made one of the most blood curdling growls she had ever heard and backed the guy back to his truck keeping about 5 feet of distance. We never saw the guy again. So I'm guessing that an appreciative dog would be of great value to have around and a cost effective deterent in this day and age.
