Well, of course you don't NEED a dog- almost nobody does, unless you work cattle, hunt, or need a "night watchman"- but as the old saying goes, "The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog." The labs are great companions, and it sounds like he's pretty well trained. Best dog we ever had was a neighbor's dog that looked a lot like the one Sloroll posted below, who kept coming to our place because the neighbor hooligan kid's favorite game was "whack the dog with a stick" (I think little Mikey was later voted by his class as "most likely to take a life"). They came and got the dog a couple of times, but finally gave up- mother of hooligan said "Mikey's not ready to take care of a dog yet"- I resisted the urge to tell her that actually, Mikey was not ready to function outside of a reform school setting yet. The dog seemed ever grateful to us for rescuing her from her situation, and is now buried under the lilac bush out by the barn.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
