The 2WD Escape is a front wheel drive. As an urban commuter they are pretty good units - my sister has one. You can put it in 4X4 and drive it on dry pavement (for a road with only patchy snow pack) without hurting the drive train. It has a a "torque converter" to absorb the differances in speed between the front and rear axles. The V6 has about 200hp and is much better then the average Taurus for acceleration and just a bit less in mileage.
