Now that brings back some memories! Been years since I drove one of those. With a full load of grain going uphill with an old straight-six, if you missed the split downshifting you'd be down in first or second gear for sure. Here's what I remember: Never use the clutch when you downshift just the axle; you have to rev up the driveshaft to get the two-speed to finish its downshift. Punch the shifter down and give it plenty of gas to shift. I never used the clutch to upshift. Pull the knob, let off the gas; listen to it fall into gear. When you do a split upshift, you can use the clutch. Just punch the shifter down an instant before you let out the clutch and it should downshift. Split downship pull the knob out before you start to shift. Should be in high range by the time you get the transmission downshifted. It's generally a bad idea to downshift the axle going down a steep grade. If you miss the shift, you'll be free-wheeling. Also, the rear end runs a lot hotter in low range, something I discovered when I had a third member blow up on me going downhill. Last and most important thing: Never park the truck with the axle in high range. It can pop out of gear on its own and the truck will roll away.
