The most capable off road vehicle is a 2007 4 door Rubicon. Nothing comes close period. No debate. Now you said wife and kids. Do you want an off road toy or a nice daily grocery getter? The milage will be rude and they are underpowed for a daily driver. They have solid front and rear axels and it will ride and drive like it. Load up the wife and kids and see how anemic it is at highway speed. Around town and in the woods you will like it. The Rubicon package is the only way to go if you are thinking about buying one. It has 4:10 gears and you will need them with the small V6 with the load you will carry. The resale is high with that package plus you get a stronger transfer case with granny gears. A cool electronic sway bar disconect, electronic locking differentials and 3/4 ton Dana 44 axels with cromoly axel shafts. It is built like a tank and performs offroad and on road like one. If its not worth the money to you now it will be as soon as you go off road and meet fellow jeepers. The new Toyota FJ cruser drives like a dream and can fly down the highway but you will break it if you take it off road. I love the new Jeep but if you are not a Jeeper I just want you to know what you are getting into.
